The Parkerville Tavern, Parkerville, Mundaring, Western Australia

If you’re looking for somewhere new to eat in the Perth Hills, we’ve found a great country pub surrounded by nature with a superbly modern & varied menu, and a bit of a colourful history!

The Parkerville Tavern is a little off the beaten track in a small suburb of Mundaring called Parkerville (who’d have guessed!) which sits across the road from the 59km Railway Reserves Heritage Trail near Jane Brook & the original location of the Parkerville Station.

History of The Parky, Parkerville, Mundaring, Western Australia

It was not our original intention to visit The Parkerville Tavern for lunch, we were on our way to get some new photos of the waterfall at John Forrest National Park (blog post coming soon) and we had planned to stop off at Inn Mahogany Creek on Great Eastern Highway.

Imagine our disappointment when we learned the Inn was closed for refurbishment. Ironically the last time we had tried to eat at Inn Mahogany Creek we picked the one day of the week they were closed, maybe they are trying to tell us something!!

The Red Door at The Parky, Parkerville, Mundaring, Western Australia

We originally discovered the The Parkerville Tavern (known as “The Parky” by the locals) the first time we were unable to eat at the Inn Mahogany Creek and we really enjoyed our meal so we decided to detour to Parkerville again and see if the Tavern’s Menu was still as good.

We weren’t disappointed, the menu was a little different than before but in a good way, it feels more like it’s evolved rather than just been changed for the sake of it.

Weekday Menu at The Parky, Parkerville, Mundaring, Western Australia

Overall the Weekday Menu has a lot of options that will appeal to different palettes. We always love to see share plates on a menu as it allows us to get some variety in our meals without eating too much but they also have sections for sarni’s & burgers, pub classics, a great selection of Harvey Beef steaks (must try one of them sometime) and salads & sides.

As well as the Weekday Menu we saw they also have:
Weekend Menu (only a slightly different from the Weekday Menu) / Wood Fired Pizza Menu (weekends only) / Seniors Menu / Kids Menu / Sunday Breakfast Menu / Weekly Specials / Function Menu / Father’s Day 2017 Breakfast Menu / Father’s Day 2017 Lunch Menu / Wine List / and a Daily Special Board in the Tavern.

Many items of the menu are customisable to your taste and appetite such as the “Sharing Board” & “Salads” where you get a base dish with a variety of extra’s you can add if you choose, what a great idea. There are also many vegetarian and gluten free options on the menu as well as good wheelchair access to the restaurant

All in all there is a lot of variety and many reasons to return and try something different ?

Lunch at The Parky, Parkerville, Mundaring, Western Australia

For our lunch Maggie & I each picked a share plate and then we added the “Onion Rings” as a third. Maggies choice was the “Trio of Warm Bao Buns with Peking Duck, Homemade Hoisin Sauce, Spring Onion and Fresh Chilli & Corriander” and I chose the “Tempura Prawns with Crispy Asian Noodles & Homemade Lime & Chilli Aioli”.

We were pleasantly surprised with the more modern approach to the Bao Buns taken by the chef. Unlike the traditional recipe the buns were much lighter and with more emphasis on the filling. They were delicious and they really did taste like authentic Peking Duck, we’ll have to try to replicate this one at home ?

The “Tempura Prawns” we’re equally light & tasty, very well cooked and served hot. The accompanying crispy noodles and salad finished off the dish wonderfully. Finally the Onion Rings were fried perfectly with the batter being light and crispy, all together it was a very enjoyable meal.

But there’s so much more to a restaurant than the food!

The ambiance, the staff, the whole environment should fit a theme and in our case we like that theme to be as relaxed, friendly and natural as possible.

The Bar at The Parky, Parkerville, Mundaring, Western Australia

When you walk into the bar room of the Parky you immediately get that old WA country pub feel. It’s not pristine and modern, it has character and history and you can feel it. The staff are very friendly and helpful, there’s a wood fire burning near the entry and you kind of feel at home.

There are dining rooms & eating areas dotted all over the place that really adding to that old world charm that these historic country buildings radiate.

When you step outside into the outdoor dining area you instantly get that natural, peaceful feeling of being in the great outdoors and surrounded by nature. The Parky is located right in the middle of the forest which is evident by the many trees, native vegetation & wildlife on the property.

There is plenty of shade under the towering Peppermint Trees with ample wooden benches and picnic tables to sit at.

Be warned though, you are in a forest and the birds will be going about their normal business which may include sitting above you and sending you the odd present in the form of small bits of bark or leaves as they peck their way through the foliage ?

Lets hope no one gets the other kind of presents that birds can drop from above!!!!

Maggie was doing a great job of modelling our Rainforest Scarf as we enjoyed the natural surroundings, in fact she seemed to blend in with the forest colours so well you can barely spot her.

In 2016 The Parkerville Tavern became a heritage listed Federation Style building in recognition for it’s contribution made to Western Australia’s cultural heritage, the building really is a great example of early 19th century Federation Architecture.

When you finish your meal be sure to take a stroll around the tavern grounds. You’ll find an emu enclosure, a chicken coup a rustic outdoor bar, a kids playground and a small stream which runs past the eating area & under a wooden bridge. It really is a beautiful location.

Photo Tips

They say the best camera is the one you have with you and your trusty phone camera can often be used to capture great images.

The best tip I can give for using a phone camera is to use the touch screen to adjust the exposure for the best results. If the image looks too dark or too bright then simply touch the area of the screen that you want to change up and the exposure will be adjusted for that part of the image. It’s that easy!

All images in this article I took on my iPhone 6s and processed in Lightroom CC & ON1 Photo 10.5

Watch out for upcoming guides on how I use Lightroom CC, ON1 Photo RAW & Adobe Photoshop CC to process my images.

Free trials are available for Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop & ON1 Photo RAW at the following links:
